This box is the second in a series that is inspired by work of an artist whose name has been lost to history and is known as “The Master of the Black Field,” circa 1880. The cedar bentwood box that motivated me to create this miniature gold and silver box has yet to be attributed to the artist, but I recognize his distinctive style. While my box is based on his work mine is unique; hand engraving allows a greater degree of detail than painting. This is one of only two Northwest Native boxes to use the gold inlay technique, where the gold shapes are cut out and inlaid into the silver using no adhesive, making a permanent bond.
